Homemade is a collection of artworks led by artist Leo Burtin which seeks to interact with, explore and question the links between food, domesticity and (auto)biography. The project aims to playfully and poetically disrupt familiar and domestic contexts in order to create structures and contexts within which to have conversations, notably on value, identity, ageing, memory, death & dying and the concept of choice.

The series has been supported by a wide range of partners including Arts Council England, Word of Warning (Manchester), The Lowry Studio (Salford), Live At LICA (Lancaster), Residence (Bristol), Space Six (Newcastle), and ARC (Stockton)

Creative Team

Leo Burtin is an artist, creative producer and writer based somewhere along the West Coast Main Line. Leo describes himself as a socially engaged practitioner, and his work often takes place at the crossroads where genres and disciplines meet, blend and blur. In the recent past, he has worked with imitating the dog, Raisin & Willow, Rajni Shah Projects and Blast Theory.

Mark Whitelaw – Collaborator & Dramaturg

Mark Whitelaw is a freelance writer and director.  He formed The Glee Club Performance Company with whom he created 14 national and international touring shows, including ‘Cotton Mather’s Wonders of the Invisible World’ (winner of Manchester Evening News Theatre Award, and Barclays New Stages, 1995).  Mark has also collaborated with numerous international theatre companies, dance companies and solo artists, including Peter Zegveld (Holland), The People Show, Norddans (Sweden), Insomniac Productions, Bedlam Dance Company and Shamshad Khan. He has also directed several projects for Duckie, including the international smash-hit show C’est Vauxhall/C’est Barbican, which won an Olivier Award and a Time Out award, both for Best Entertainment in 2003.

Rajni Shah – Mentor

Rajni Shah has been creating and directing original performance work since 1999. Her work ranges from large-scale performance installations made through an in-depth collaborative process to small solo interventions in public spaces. She has performed in the UK, Europe and USA, including the National Review of Live Art, Alternate ROOTS, Tanzquartier Wien, Arnolfini Bristol, Nuffield Lancaster, SpielArt Munich and the Chelsea Theatre.  Her work as an artist leans gently but clearly across disciplines, countries and thought structures.
